How to Jailbreak 5.0.1 iOS iPhone 4S, iPad 2 with Absinthe

Earlier today, Chronic Dev Team released Absinthe that jailbreaks all A5 powered iOS devices. Released by the hackers at Chronic Dev Team, it’s as simple as plugging in your iPhone, running the app and clicking the appropriate button. Boom! The following instructions will help you jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

Absinthe jailbreak

There are some pros and cons attached with jailbreaking. The Cons of it is your iPhone factory and/or service provider warranty will be void, that’s the only cons. The pros of jailbreaking it are you will be able to install cydia apps like IntelliScreenX, 3G Unrestrictor 5, etc. You can also install Custom theme, run Siri on your iPhone 4 and more.

Note for Unlockers:

A5 Jailbreak – Absinthe - isn’t recommended for people who are itching to unlock iPhone 4S since long. It is highly recommended not to update your 4S to latest iOS 5.0.1, since it will upgrade your baseband and you will have to endlessly wait to unlock it. They SHOULD be staying at 5.0. If you’re an iPhone 4S owner who already updated to 5.0.1, it’s too late to go back down to 5.0, but if you’re on 9A406 it is possible to downgrade the BB by going to the 9A405 version of 5.0.1 while the window is still open. Now that you know the Pros and Cons you are now ready to jailbreak your phone. Just follow the simple Steps below. It couldn’t be any simpler than this method right here.

Step 1) Download and extract Absinthe from the .zip and start Absinthe.

Step 2) Connect your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 to your computer and click ‘Jailbreak’.

Step 3) Press ‘Jailbreak’ button. Immediately you will see a sign that request you to wait for a few minutes as the first process requires a little time. Let Absinthe do its thing, you will notice scrolling text on your screen to assure you that something is happening in background.

During this process, many files are transferred from the computer to iOS installed on the iPhone 4S. In fact, the size of the application Absinthe on the desktop increases. Please do not interrupt the process. It may take time which is perfectly normal with Absinthe jailbreak.

We are posting a series of photos in sequence while jailbreaking our iPhone 4S. This will help you in following up with the method.



This screen will remain active for a long time. At the end of this your iPhone will reboot. During the reboot process please do not touch your Mac or iPhone 4S. Sit tight and wait for a while.

As soon as the Absinthe injection is complete your device will reboot automatically.

Absinthe will now send payload data.

Step 4) Now on iPhone, you will notice an icon that says jailbreak on your Homescreen. But I found ‘Absinthe’ instead.

Just tap on that, after  after which your device will reboot again.

If the server is down and you get an Error establishing a database connection message then tap the Settings icon on your springboard and turn on VPN.

You will get a configuration error but after about a minute or two your iPhone 4S will reboot with Cydia on the Springboard.

    I got an ipad 2. when I open ABSINTHE on any of his versions the jailbrake button (on the computer) doesn´t  work. I tried connect the ipad after an before open the  ABSINTHE but is the same. Could someone help?

    i got a iphone 4s from US which they said as factory unlocked… my realtive sent here to INDIA. when i inserted with a local sim .. it says the sim is invalid, insert a sim that came with apple. i called apple they said its at&t network locked.. can i jailbreak with ABSINTHE 3.0 and unlock the network.. pls help..

    Hi
    I am using windows 7 64 + Absinthe 0.3
    I reset my iphone 4s to factory settings, When I press jailbreak button the program starts
    and goes about 1/4 inch and stays there I waited 4 hrs does not move.

    My phone is not activated does it need to be activated for
    the program to work ?

    I’m using MAC OS X 10.5.8 + Absinthe 0.3
    Whenever I opened the App it crashes. It doesn’t matter if I have my iPad connected or not, it still crashes.
    Here is the error code;

    after a quick restore on my iphone 4s I was able to perform successful jailbreak on first try…everything is working

    HOWEVER, my ipad2 is still hanging on “beginning jailbreak, this may take a while…” it has sat for quite a while and won’t progress even after restoring in itunes.

      make sure you disable password and restrictions and do a “reset network settings” before rerunning Absinthe. the first time you rerun it, it will fix whatever went wrong the first time and after its done(after it says recovery complete) manually reboot the iPhone. when its back on rerun the jailbreak again and let it do its thing. after its done click the Absinthe icon in the springboard of your iPhone and it should reboot automatically(if it doesn’t do the VPN trick) 
      You should now have Cydia in your springboard after it reboot :)

    I purchased a unlocked 4S at the Apple Store last month (replacement for a stolen one expensive sucker). My Modem Firmware is 1.0.13. If I use the jailbreak, will i lose my factory unlocked status on my iPhone 4S (5.0.1)?

      Factory unlocked iPhones never gets Locked.. You can use the jailbreak without second thought..

    Hmm. Absinthe starts, but all I get is a grey bar and no progress. Then after 30 minutes of nothing: unexpected quit. Then Absinthe does a restore, I start Absinthe again it all fails again :-(

    I am using an older PowerMac G5 OSX 10.5.8….Opening Absinthe gives an error “This program is not compatible with this architecture build.”….Can anyone confirm that Absinthe does not work on OSX below Snow Leopard?

      It seems that Absinthe requires libcurl.4.dylib version 6.0.0 whereas Mac OS X 10.5.8 has 5.0.0, this hack works by replacing libcurl4 with version 6.0.0. This involves tweaking system files, proceed at your own risk!

      • Download and extract libcurl.4.dylib 6.0.0.zip http://cmdshft.ipwn.me/other/files/software/libcurl.4.dylib_6_0_0.zip to your Desktop

      • Launch Terminal.app (Located in /Applications/Utilities/) and execute the following commands:

      • First we’ll backup libcurl4 by renaming it

      sudo mv /usr/lib/libcurl.4.dylib /usr/lib/libcurl.4.dylib-backup

      • Now you’ll move the newly downloaded libcurl file from your Mac OS X Desktop to /usr/lib

      sudo mv ~/Desktop/libcurl.4.dylib /usr/lib/

      • Launch Absinthe and it should work fine!

        Well, I did as you said. I restarted my computer and now it is just stuck with a big Apple logo and a spinning circle underneath of it. So I assume I proceeded at my own risk and now I probably after to reinstall my OSX unless you have any suggestions.

      Do a full backup in itunes / then restore in itunes / when it restarts for the last time and asks if you want to restore from backup, close iTunes, start absinthe and it should work. when you’re fully jailbroken, restart iTunes and restore from your backup, and your done.

    still getting the “error establishing a database connection”. I tried the VPN ON and still does not work. whats the proper way to retry? reboot? re do the injection?

      When jailbreaking: Do not have a passcode set. Do not have your own VPN setup (Absinthe needs to setup its own).

      Toggle VPN only AFTER Absinthe says it’s done, or it will not work. VPN SHOULD error and then reboot soon. If it does not, rerun Absinthe!

      If Absinthe crashes, reboot your DEVICE and try again.
