Led by the hackers at the iPhone Dev Team, an untethered jailbreak is finally running iOS 5.0.1 on all iOS devices (minus iPad 2 and iPhone 4S). iPhone Dev team has packaged the pod2g’s untether exploit into Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 which works on both Mac and Windows. Here’s the full guide on how to Untether your iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak using Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 on Mac OS. Steps are same for Windows users.

Supported Devices

Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 supports iPhone 3GS (Old Bootrom, new bootrom), iPhone 4 (GSM, CDMA), 1st-gen iPad, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G. It does not support Apple TV2, iPhone 4S and iPad 2 right now. The reason the untether won’t work as-is on the iPad 2 or iPhone 4S is that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad2 or iPhone 4S is not susceptible to the limera1n bootrom exploits.

Note for iPhone Unlockers

ultrasn0w unlockers can safely jailbreak their iOS device using the latest version of redsn0w, since Ultrasn0w 1.2.5 is now compatible with iOS 5.0.1 and does work with older basebands – 01.59.00, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, 06.15.00. Make sure to preserve the basebanband.

Pre-requisites

  • An iPhone 4, 3GS or iPod Touch 4G, 3G or iPad
  • Latest iTunes installed on your computer.
  • Download iOS 5.0.1 on your desktop.
  • Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 [Download link]

Already tethered jailbroken iOS 5.0.1?

You can either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak  but make sure to deselect “Install Cydia” or install the Cydia package Corona 5.0.1 untether prepared by the chronic dev team.  Either of the two will work, since both of them uses same untether exploit. But for jailbroken users, we prefer to useCorona untether.

Step 1: Download the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b1 and save onto your desktop. Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step 2: Create a folder with any name of your choice on your desktop. Here we have named the folder as “Pwnage”. Place the redsn0w folder (refer step 1) and required iOS 5 IPSW into the pwnage folder.

Step 3: Update your device to iOS 5.0.1, if you haven’t already. To do so, connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to the computer and launch iTunes. Select your device from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button.

Step 4: Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the iOS 5.0.1 firmware IPSW. Click the Choose button to continue. iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step 5: Run Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 and point it to iOS 5.0.1 to proceed with the jailbreak. Click Next to continue, once the firmware has been verified. Windows 7 users MUST run the redsn0w as an administrator mode. You can do this by right click the executable and select “Run as Administrator..” from the contextual menu.

Step 6: Now click the Jailbreak button

Step 7: Connect the iPod Touch or iPhone or iPad to Windows via USB cable. Make sure its OFF then click the Next button.

Step 8: You will be prompted to put the iPod Touch in DFU mode. Follow the on-screen instructions. To enter in DFU mode: Press the Home and Power together for exactly 10 seconds. Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 9: Another automated process will then reboot your iPhone

Step 10: RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

Step 11: You will now have a new screen where you can select packages to install. Select Cydia and other options of your choice. click Next to continue.

Step 12: Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will then start uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Once the ramdisk uploading process is completed, you will be notified as “done”. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

We sincerely thank pod2g for all his hard work towards untether 5.0.1 jailbreak! In case you are facing any sort of issue, sound off in comments or on twitter.

Hello, I had my ipod touch 4g jailbroken (untethered) and that was fine for a while. When I installed the H1siri package I got stuck in reboot loop. the only way to leave it (that i found) was the ‘just boot tethered right now’ option. Now it’s tethered and I want it back untethered. But the Corona Unthetered 5.0.1 package just puts it back into reboot forever if i dont boot tethered. And if i try to jailbreak untethered by redsn0w (0.9.10.b4 and 0.9.10.b5c) and then not selecting ‘Install Cydia’ it goes well untill it says on my ipod: ERROR and i boot it tethered again.  I also tried restoring to a 5.0.1 ipsw by itunes wich gives me  error 3194 (i couldn’t solve that).
I would like to know if there is a way for me to get untethered again?
