Now the chains are finally off! The iPhone 4, iPad 1G (along with its other A4 brethren) can be jailbroken using pod2g’s untether exploit. The hacker confirmed via a string of updates posted on the blog that the exploit behind the current untethered jailbreak is working and alive on iOS 5.0.1. He is currently running the jailbreak on his iPad (first generation), the iPod touch 4G, iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.0.1 including the Apple TV on iOS 4.4.3.
“iPad 1 5.0.1 untethered code is done, testing tomorrow with a friend’s device. Just to let you know my progress in real time. iPhone 3GS 5.0.1 untethered code is done. Testing tomorrow also! iPod 4G 5.0.1 untethered too ! ). Apple TV 2 4.43 untethered done also. Will be able to test in some days.”
Ever since the release of the iOS 5 beta rigs, the jailbreak community is begging for untethered jailbreak. Three hackers – Musclenerd of iPhone Dev Team, Joshua Hill of Chronic Dev Team, and pod2g accepted the challenge posted by Apple labs to untether the exploit.
No one except pod2g was able to discover vulnerability that could untether the iOS 5 jailbreak exploit. Interestingly, Pod2g admitted in one tweet that the papers on iOS exploitation written by Stefan Esser (aka i0nic) helped him to untether iOS 5 jailbreak.
In addition Musclenerd is working hard to jailbreak iPad 2 and iPhone 4S apart from unlocking iPhone 4S. He has already shared a teaser image. But since the exploit is still in its rudimentary stage, he hasn’t released it. He is still working hard to turn it into a full blown exploit and then package it with redsn0w tool for final delivery. Chronic Dev Tem, on the other hand is still hunting millions of crash reports for a new exploit.
Most likely pod2g will not release a jailbreak tool but might assist Chronic Dev Team with the untether exploit he is having. If you care to untether jailbreak, hold off on upgrading to upcoming iOS 5.1 until a jailbreak tool is updated if you can.
However, there is no ETA been shared by pod2g. Continue to be patient, supportive, and be extremely excited that it is on the way! Perhaps, the best way to know about it is to follow Jailbreaks on Twitter.
