Nicholas Allegra, popularly known as Comex among jailbreaking community has probably left the jailbreak scene. This is definitely bad news for all who are itching for a iPhone 4S or iPad 2 jailbreak on iOS 5.x. Earlier this week, Comex tweeted:
People still occasionally ask me on Twitter for jailbreaks for various iOS devices, and it makes me feel bad. I don’t develop them anymore!
He hasn’t cited any reason but working with Apple as an intern could have prompted 19-year old Comex to withdraw and quit himself from jailbreaking scene.
For those of you who don’t know, Nicholas Allegra (aka, comex) is a prolific iPhone hacker and a lead developer behind tools such as Spirit userland Jailbreak and JailbreakMe.com – the first jailbreak for the iPad 2 but soon patched by Apple. Since the jailbreak was browser based, Apple Stores and other Apple retailers such as Best Buy block JailbreakMe.com on their Wi-Fi networks.
Within few days, JailbreakMe 3.0 became popular and reportedly helped users to jailbreak at least two million devices across the world. He even received a “Pwnie” award at the Black Hat conference 2011 for “Best Client-Side Bug” for this work. Referring to the shot put on the portal (hinting PDF exploit), just before releasing JailbreakMe 3.0, comex tweeted:
I’ve always wanted to make a teaser photo for a jailbreak by visiting the corresponding resort and taking some melodramatic shots of signs.
Maybe he really is quitting? Who knows, but it seems like the iPhone Dev team’s Musclenerd will be releasing iPad 2 and iPhone 4S jailbreak. The tool might plausibly come from Chronic Dev Team camp too in form of greenpois0n.
We sincerely thank comex for all his hard work towards jailbreak community! Maybe we’ll see you around again soon. We hope so! Do you? I guess Comex just needs a little appreciation. Sound off in comments!
[Update 1]: Comex finally confirms that he quit jailbreaking since he is interning for Apple.
