DingleBerry 0.3 has been released that finally jailbreaks QNX OS based BlackBerry PlayBook. Users, who are running BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.8 can download DingleBerry jailbreak tool to boot up Android OS on the device and obtain access to the Android Market.

Jailbroken BlackBerry PlayBook provides access to system files, new features, and a possible option to run a custom OS (like Android, in this case). Users can even run unsigned apps or code on a tablet which are rather unsupported by the manufacturer.

Hackers xpvqusneuralic, and cmwdotme, who have been working hard since its release, claims that the root also works on the 2.0 beta and that the rooting (Untethered Jailbreak) persists after the device is rebooted. Hacker Chris Wade explains how exploit works:

The Dingleberry exploit works by exploiting the fact that the backups taken by the desktop manager arn’t signed. It modifys the smb.conf which enables us to have it run a script as root whenever an smb connection is made

Before you install the hack on your playbook, please note that the DingleBerry beta 0.3 won’t re-enable web access to Hulu, it will only enable root – nothing else. So, I recommend you waiting if you have no idea what that means. However, the hacker promises to push the feature in subsequent release alongside a Mac version. Hacker Chris Wade confirmed in a tweet earlier today.

Hulu, Netflix all those kinds of tweaks will be enabled in a later release. The goal is to just get this out the door before RIM patches it

Step 6: You are now ready to jailbreak your RIM tablet. Connect your Playbook to your Windows computer USB port and enter the IP address and password.

Step 7: Click the “Jailbreak” button at the bottom. The tool will now perform series of steps such as installing the exploit, modifying the smb.conf and more. Within minutes, your Playbook will be rooted and jailbroken.

Video: Root Access on BlackBerry PlayBook

Jailbreaking is popular among iOS devices like iPhone, iPad, iPod touch but now it seems that there’s a thriving jailbreak community for BlackBerry Playbook too. People will now actively seek out security holes in QNX to liberate themselves from RIM’s restrictions and install applications that haven’t been blessed by Canada based RIM.

Just after the release of DingleBerry, RIM has already confirmed to close the exploit in an update tomorrow — so it is advisable for you to skip that OS upgrade if you have already jailbroken or plans to root the tablet.

This seems to be just a start of a contentious relationship between hackers and RIM — hackers will discover another security hole to do their magic, and naturally RIM will again patch those holes in subsequent OS updates since RIM believes that unfettered access will contributed to a significant piracy problem on the platform in addition to critical security issues.

Let us know, if you face any sort of trouble in jailbreaking your BlackBerry Playbook using DingleBerry.
