Apple have started selling factory unlocked iPhone 4S at select retail stores without locking you in a particular carrier contract for the next two years. These devices are being sold at full retail price – $649, $749 and $849 for the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB iPhone 4S models respectively.
Developer @stroughtonsmith has confirmed to have unlocked his iPhone 4S in the United States by connecting to the T-Mobile’s network using his O2 SIM-card on roaming. Even, John Gruber (@gruber) verified the purchase after successfully activating a Canadian SIM card on his Sprint iPhone 4S, reports Macrumors.
In case, you are planning to buy unlocked version of iPhone 4S, follow some simple steps in order to set-up your iPhone. Get an active micro-SIM card from a supported GSM wireless carrier like T-Mobile inUSA, insert it into the slot and then connect it to your Mac via USB cable. Start iTunes and then a pop-up will appear saying “Congratulations your iPhone has been unlocked”
Such “unlocked” iPhones, untethered to a particular network, will help increase market competition and, at the end, may result in more competitive rates. Isn’t?
