iPad do not incorporate native telephone capabilities and the SIM that comes along with is capable of sending the internet data only. You cannot make telephone calls using iPad officially. But can it be used as a full-fledged iPhone? Yes! You can!

iOS jailbreak developer Bassam Kassem has developed a new Cydia tweak ‘[Ac!D]TelePad’ that Transform your 1st Generation iPad into a fully function mobile phone with the ability of making or receiving GSM phone calls and sending or receiving Text Messages (SMS). In order to turn your iPad into a fully functional phone, a SIM card is required that can make cellular phone calls & sends SMS.

Supported Models: The hack works only on jailbroken iPad (1st Gen.) 3G model only (WiFi Models not supported). [Ac!D]TelePad tweak does not deliver support to iPad 2 or ‘The New iPad’ (iPad 3), but yes, the team is hard at work to push the support as soon as they can. Unlike PhoneIt-iPad which comes for $20, [Ac!D]TelePad comes at no cost.

Important Note:
  1. You may need to install a tweak called TetherMe to re gain your internet connectivity (3G) after uninstalling this package just incase you lost it.
  2. You must make sure that you are using an activated phone SIM card and not Data SIM cards that comes with the device like from AT&T. If you’re having iPhone, install its SIM card into the iPad slot.

Here’s how to turn your 3G iPad into a viable iPhone alternative out of the box.

How to Make Phone Calls from iPad

Step 1: A jailbroken iPad 3G. If you haven’t already jailbroken your device, you can do it right now using redsn0w jailbreak tool. Guides can be located here.

Step 2: Install [Ac!D]TelePad app on your iPad 3G via Cydia Repo (http://cydia.bassamkassem.com/). The new [Ac!D]TelePad app should be available through the team’s Cydia repository right now.

Once installed, [Ac!D]TelePad turns your iPad 3G into full-fledged phone allowing you to make or receive phone calls and text messages. With No Special Hardware all what you need is Jailbroken iPad 3G. Here’s the video demo in action.

Warning: We haven’t been able to test it for ourselves quite yet. Proceed with caution.
