Just before the launch, in a series of robberies, burglars have stolen 191 iPhone 5s. 33 iPhone 5s were stolen from an Au store in Ibaraki city, a suburban nook in Osaka prefecture. 116 iPhone 5s were stolen from a Softbank store in Western Osaka (4:24am) , including one store display and 42 iPhones were stolen from a nearby Au store (2:30am). The total cost is evaluated at 7.45 million yen, or about $95,000 worth of iPhone 5s.
According to the police, iPhone units inWestern Osakwere taken from the locked backroom within a four minute span from 4:24 a.m. as shown on security camera footage. The video recording also showed there were three culprits, all likely to be male.
However, some residents called police a little before 3 a.m. saying they saw three men snooping around the Au store inIbarakicity. The police said it is uncertain whether the robbery is related to the incident inIbaraki, located about 20 minutes away by car. The men and the phones remain at large. A police spokesman said there was no one lined up outside the store at the time of the robbery.
