iPhone Dev Team’s @musclenerd has achieved an important milestone by discovering a way to downgrade iPhone baseband. In a short tweet-announcement, MuscleNerd sparked our hopes further confirming that the baseband downgrade solution is a step closer.

The hacker was able to downgrade iPhone 3G/3GS baseband (from BB 06.15.00 for  owners who got officially unlocked) in modem’s firmware (the code that controls how your handset connects to a cellular network) for use with any GSM carrier. This means that any iPhone user who upgraded to iPad baseband 6.15.00 for achieving the unlock, can downgrade back to BB 5.13.04 and unlock via ultrasn0w. And yes! those users will get their GPS working.

This does not mean that in a week or so, iPhone owners will be able to downgrade baseband for unlocking their handset. Since the exploit works only on officially unlocked iPhone, a lot of work still needs to be done. The iPhone Dev Team will take some time before it is ready for jailbreaking community. No ETA has been shared so far but to be the first to know about iPhone 4S free unlock, just follow us on twitterGoogle+ orFacebook.

I am on iOS 4.1. Will this downgrade work on 4.1 or requires newer version of iOS. If new is required then can anyone provide me tutorial for upgrading my iOS to 5.1.1 using latest version of sn0wbreeze in order to preserve my 6.15.00 baseband.
    Thanks in advance.
