Many users have failed to jailbreak their Verizon (CDMA) and AT&T (GSM) iPhone 4 on 5.1.1 (9B206 build) using Absinthe 2.0.4 and all previous releases made so far by The Chronic Dev Team. Every time they try, the Absinthe tool crashes in the middle of the jailbreak process on Windows 7 with an error message – “Program has stopped working”.
The awful part is that you’ve no choice but to close the absinthe application which ends up deleting all contacts without jailbreaking your device. If you attempt to re-jailbreak it tries to fix the problem you had last time. Luckily, your contacts will come back but the story remains the same – You’ll end up getting the same error message.
In case you are getting the same error and is unable to jailbreak your non-A5 device which includes iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G/3G and first generation iPad, follow an alternative method to free your device from Apple’s restriction. Be sure that your contacts are restored, by opening absinthe. If the tool says it’s fixing stuff, let it fix the stuff and if it re-tries to jailbreak the device, let it fail again, then restart the program and let it fix stuff. Now follow the steps below:
Jailbreak Instructions
Step 1: Download Redsnow 0.9.11b4 from our iOS downloads page.
Step 2: Extract the zip file and Open the redsn0w. Click the jailbreak option. Follow the on-screen instructions it gives to you. Don’t install a custom bundle, and be sure that ‘Install Cydia’ is not checked.
Step 3: After your iPhone is jailbroken, boot your device tethered. If your iPhone ends up with one of the following, proceed to Step 4 with an exception to second point listed below.
- Stays on the Apple Logo for a while and then finally crashes.
- After booting, a white wheel comes up and then the iPhone returns to the lockscreen for about 5 seconds. Again the wheel comes back, and your device returns to the lockscreen (This is actually a respring loop)
- If your iPhone starts but none of the jailbroken apps, and Safari work.
Step 4: Open Redsn0w, click Extras, and then click Just boot. Follow the on-screen instructions.
If your iPhone is in respring loop, hold the home and power buttons for a while with the USB cable plugged in to turn it off. Don’t unplug the USB cable after the phone is turned off.
After your iPhone starts up, open Cydia, and download the Rocky Racoon Untether 5.1.1 package and install it. You can follow our previous guide on how to untether jailbreak with Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 app. Your iPhone is now untethered jailbroken on iOS 5.1.1 ipsw.
