The development of much awaited Redd00r project is almost completed. Brian Cooper, one the developer behind this project, today publicly released a Redd00r developer preview video (pre-alpha) showing lots of 5.x.x features running smoothly on iPod touch 2G (MC model). As evident in video, numerous options can easily be enabled or disabled at will via installation wizard or through settings panel.

I know, you must be having ‘one’ conflicting question in your mind – what is the difference between Redd00r and WhiteD00r?

Redd00r Developer Preview Video

Well, the answer is simple! Whited00r doesn’t support MC model devices. Redd00r is the project that will support the iPod Touch 2G MC model. Redd00r is for iOS 4 devices, iPod touch 2G and iPhone 3G. They are only similar in the sense that it is custom IPSW for old generation devices; otherwise, they are made for different devices entirely. Whited00r 5.1 was released a while back for all the un-supported iDevices (sans iPod touch 2G MC).

  • Whited00r: iPod Touch 1G , 2G MB and iPhone 3G on iOS 3.1.3
  • Redd00r: iPod Touch 2G MC and iPhone 3G on iOS 4.2.1

Both WhiteD00r and Redd00r brings various iOS 5.x features such as wallpapers, new system sounds, new semi transparent dock, custom home-screen backgrounds, all new icons from iOS 5.x, multitasking, MMS, Tap-to-focus camera, video recording, a kind of hacked-together iCloud which uses DropBox as its back end, and more, without compromising with the performance speed. What you don’t get isNotificationCenteror the App Store.

In simple terms, the iOS 5.x goodness is mixed to the iOS 3.1.3 and 4.2.1 to cook custom ipsw which looks like you have installed iOS 5.x on your device. Of course, this is not a complete iOS 5 port, but both WhiteD00r and Redd00r do deliver the best features to old-generation devices.

The idea of developing custom ipsw came after Apple discontinued providing software updates (starting iOS 4.x) on ARM6 devices such as iPhone 1G, 2G, iPod touch 2G and 3G since it resulted in serious slowdown of the device.

Today, both Whited00r and Redd00r custom ipsw are seen as a replacement firmware for aging iOS devices. The installation is pretty simple and straight forward. Just download it and restore it using iTunes. It’s that simple! And the best part is that they are pre- jailbroken with Cydia installed.

Since Redd00r video demo is already out, its release shouldn’t be far off. Keep your eyes peeled as it will improve your iPod touch 2G’s abilities. Would you try installing Redd00r on your old iPod touch model? Share your opinion in the comment section below.
