AbsintheNow that Chronic Dev Team has released Absinthe 2.0 to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 ( build 9B206), it now time to learn how to jailbreak. The process for jailbreaking iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS is fairly simple and straight-forward. It only requires plugging iPhone to the computer, running the Absinthe 2.0 utility and clicking the “Jailbreak” button.

If you’re Apple iPhone is running iOS 5.1, you must upgrade it to 5.1.1 before you follow the steps to jailbreak; else you’ll not be able to jailbreak your iPhone (Note: Absinthe 2.0 doesn’t support iOS 5.1). This is done by downloading a stock IPSW from Apple and applying it with iTunes (preferably, the latest version of iTunes).

Note: If you have already jailbroken your iPhone 4 or 3GS “tethered” using redsn0w, there is no need to re-jailbreak. You can simply install Rocky Racoon Untether 5.1.1 Package from Cydia to convert tethered jailbreak into Un-tethered. New users, however, have to follow Absinthe 2.0 process. The following easy-to-follow instructions will help you jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 (Build 9B206) on iPhone. It couldn’t be any simpler than this method right here. It’s a 1-click jailbreak.

Requirements

  • iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS running iOS 5.1.1 IPSW.
  • Computer running on Mac OS X or Windows OS or Linix.
  • USB cable to connect iPhone to computer

Instructions: iPhone iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak

The following easy-to-follow instructions will help you jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 (Build 9B206) on A5 based iPhone 4S, A4 based iPhone 4 and third generation iPhone 3GS (both Old and New Bootrom). It couldn’t be any simpler than this method right here.

Step 1) Download and extract Absinthe from the .zip and start Absinthe.

Step 2) Connect your iOS device to your computer. The tool will automatically detect your iOS device and firmware running on it.

Step 3) Click the ‘Jailbreak’ button to begin the process. After clicking, you will see a message that requests you to wait for a while as the first process requires a little time.

Let Absinthe 2.0 do its thing, you will notice scrolling text on your screen to assure you that something is happening in background.

During this process, initial jailbreak data files are transferred from the computer to iOS installed on your device followed by final jailbreak data. Please do not interrupt the process. It may take time which is perfectly normal with Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak.

Your iPhone will reboot automatically. During the reboot process, do not touch your Mac or iPhone device. Sit tight and wait for a while.

As soon as the Absinthe injection is complete your iPhone device will reboot automatically. The message window of the tool will read – “Waiting for process to complete…”

Once you get the message – “Done Enjoy”, you will notice Cydia on your iPhone Springboard

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iPhone 4S on 5.1.1 (untethered). The method is “exactly” the same for iPhone 4 (both CDMA and GSM) and iPhone 3GS on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Easy, isn’t it?

In case you’re getting errors during the jailbreak process post in the comment section below. We will try to troubleshoot them to achieve clean and stable jailbreak. Be sure to follow Jailbreak on twitter.

[UPDATE 2]: You can now download Absinthe v2.0 Brings to Fix Hang issue

[UPDATE 3]: Some of the users are getting lockdown errors which states - “Error detecting device (lockdown error -5)” and “Could not connect to lockdown”…We’ve contacted developer @pod2g and @pimskeks, and they have suggested an easy fix. Just go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings. Download Absinthe 2.0.1 and run it again. Let us know if this fixes the annoying lockdown error?

I fully restored my iPod Touch 4g 5.1.1 with iTunes and I tried jailbreaking with Absinthe v2.0 and Absinthe said the jailbreak process was done. I check my iPod and I can’t find Cydia.

    • Aldori

It says “recovery complete”. Cydia doesn’t pop up on my iPod.

I’m having iOS 5.1 here on my iPhone 4S, should I take risk and try to update to iOS 5.1.1 (what if Apple created for users some obstacles to install the jailbreak, after recent jailbreak availability?)

I upgraded my iphone 3gs to 5.1.1 but lost all contacts and unfortunately lost back up as well. But I saved shsh Bolb for my previous IOS (4.1).
If I downgrade it back to 4.1 using SHSH bolb can I retrieve my contacts back?

  • Sakar

Got a new and really weird problem. After jailbraking and restoring from backup I open Cydia and it says me “Preparing filesystem”. After some time appears a message of running out of space. Although it’s about 7.5 Gb free. The it leaves me two choises cancel and options, whatever I pick there comes black screen my iPhone makes some sound and my homescreen apears with no phone, messages, calendar, clock, music and the rest of basic applications. Last time clocks and settings remained but still. All I can do is restore my device via iTunes again and try to re-jailbreak it in 7th time.
This problem appears 3rd time, I tried to remove all my music, so I saved 6 Gb, but it’s not working still. According to Google I seem to be the only man on the Earth having such problem. It’s unbelievable that I.m most unluckiest man on the planet, so I think I just do something extremly stupid and wrong. Please tell me waht.

    • Earl Fox

Did you tried to “Reset all the settings and content” from main “Settings” menu?

iPad 3, 64GB WiFi model. Tried JB’ing 3 times and keep getting “Recovery completed. If you want to retry jailbreaking, unplug your device and plug it back in.” Any help would be appreciated.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jimmy.nomura Jimmy Nomura

Just confirmed Mike Webb’s suggestion. You need to make sure you do a backup first, choose Restore in iTunes, when it’s done then use Absinthe to JB your iOS device. After that’s done then restore from a backup. Hope this helps.

  • cherryman

SOLUTION!!!!!!! GUYS i had the same exact problem with that recovery

i downloaded absinthe and when I unzip the package it just runs a bunch of stuff in cmd prompt and does not actually open up absinthe. Running windows 7 iphone 4s. I tried to open the zip package while the phone was plugged in idk if that makes a difference

    • http://twitter.com/DJakes621 Jake

You need to extract it before you run the command prompt. Then it’ll create Absinthe in whatever folder you extracted it to.
