The process for jailbreaking “The New iPad” (iPad 3) is fairly simple and straight-forward. It only requires plugging iPad 3 device to the computer, running the Absinthe 2.0 and clicking the “Jailbreak” button.

If you’re third generation Apple tablet is running iOS 5.1, you must upgrade it to 5.1.1 before you follow the steps to jailbreak; else you’ll not be able to jailbreak ‘The New iPad’ (Note: Absinthe 2.0 doesn’t support iOS 5.1 on A5/A5X devices). This is done by downloading a stock IPSW from Apple and applying it with iTunes (preferably, the latest version of iTunes).

Although, chances are minimal that serious issues will arise out of it. Users looking to follow the steps are strongly advised to make back-ups of their data before installing Absinthe 2.0 on their iPad 3.

Requirements

  • ‘The New iPad’ (iPad 3) running on iOS 5.1.1 (9B206) IPSW.
  • Computer running on Mac OS X or Windows OS.
  • USB cable to connect iPad to computer

Instructions: iOS 5.1.1 iPad 3 Jailbreak

The following easy-to-follow instructions will help you jailbreak A5X based iPad 3. It couldn’t be any simpler than this method right here.

Step 1) Download and extract Absinthe from the .zip and start Absinthe.

Step 2) Connect your iOS device to your computer. The tool will automatically detect your iOS device and firmware running on it.

Step 3) Click the Jailbreak button to begin the process. After clicking, you will see a message that requests you to wait for a while as the first process requires a little time.

Let Absinthe 2.0 do its thing, you will notice scrolling text on your screen to assure you that something is happening in background.

During this process, initial jailbreak data files are transferred from the computer to iOS installed on your device followed by final jailbreak data. Please do not interrupt the process. It may take time which is perfectly normal with Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak.

Your iPad will reboot automatically. During the reboot process please do not touch your Mac or iPad. Sit tight and wait for a while.

As soon as the Absinthe injection is complete your iPad device will reboot automatically. The message window of the tool will read – “Waiting for process to complete…”

Once you get the message – “Done Enjoy”, you will notice Cydia on your iPad Springboard

Congratulations, you have successfully jailbroken your iPad 3 on 5.1.1 (untethered). The method is “exactly” the same for iPad 2 and first generation iPad. Easy, isn’t it?

You can now try installing jailbreak applications and tweaks on your tablet. Feel free to post errors (in comment section) you’re getting during the jailbreak process. We will try to troubleshoot them to achieve clean and stable jailbreak.

Did you give any of the jailbreak apps a try? How was your experience? Share your jailbreak adventures in the comments section below or bug Jailbreak on twitter.

[UPDATE 2]: Download Absinthe 2.0.1 Fix to Hang issue

[UPDATE 3]: Some of the users are getting lockdown errors which states – “Error detecting device (lockdown error -5)” and “Could not connect to lockdown”…We’ve contacted developer @pod2g and @pimskeks, and they have suggested an easy fix. Just go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings. Download Absinthe 2.0.1 and run it again. Let us know if this fixes the annoying lockdown error?

recently jailbroke my iphone 4 ios 5.1.1 with absinthe worked fine until doing recent update of Installous. Had to reboot the phone then it went on a constant loop. Have tried restoring in via itunes but to no avail can anyone help me please??

Hi, I Ran absinthe 2.0.2 to jailbreak my iPad 3, all went fine except that my Cydia app crashes upon clicking it. Tried restoring through iTunes to try again but all I keep getting is an error 3194. Absinthe says I cannot re-run jailbreak as it detects it untethered already. So it seems that I’m stuck for now but if someone has any other ideas I could try please help. Thank you. Note: didnt take out my pass code as recommended but hope that wasn’t why? Also I did make it work for an iPhone 4S I have.

Never mind, found out my Hosts file was redirecting my iTunes to Saurik’s server. So I was able to restore, although not jailbreak ing for now as my stupid cable company is not allowing me use of their app (it detects my ipad as jailbroken) to see cable channels through my iPad while in my home network. So still deciding if benefits outweigh the cons. I already got both my iPhones jail broken.

    Hello
I have jailbroken my iPad 3 .. all seemed well but when I try to use Installous 4, I always get the following error message “download failed unexpected content” I have spent all day trying to resolve this .. I have reinstalled installous 4 and tried various other things but I can not get past this message ?? getting packages via cydia is not a problem – but I need to be able to use
    installous 4

Any body else have this problem and if so can you shed any light on this

    Many Thanks

Use Absinthe 2.0.1 to get rid of hanging issue while jailbreaking the ios device

  • http://twitter.com/yahirvite Yahir Vite Lugardo

I tried Erasing Settings and content and it does’t work, and this is the way I could JB my iPhone 4S:

I downloaded again the IPSW 5.1.1 from
    http://cydiablog.com/downloads/

1.- I started iTunes and I “clean-restored” the device using the downloaded IPSW
2.- When the iPhone was restored I activated and then click jailbreak in Absinthe

The trick is that you MUST restore from iTunes from a Downloaded iPSW

Erase Settings and Content didn’t work for me.

Worked fast and great for me on my iPad 3,2 (Verizon) and I Didn’t wipe data

  • Soft1ce

I can’t get it working on my iPad3 wifi MC705LL. I updated firmware to 5.1.1, erased all settings then tried. Absinthe 2.0 shows waiting for reboot, but nothing is happening on the iPad. I tried restoring in iTunes, same problem. It has been sitting like this for 15 minutes now. I tried restarting absinthe once before and got the error -5. Erased all settings, tried again – same same.

    • SoftIce

I tried the exe on a windows 7 machine and it worked flawlessly. It didn’t work on my MacBook Air running 10.7.3 . Maybe it requires 10.7.4???

  • Ram

full ios 5.1.1 restore with itunes fixed it for me too

  • Kloons

Done, clean restore from DFU worked for 4S ;) thnx!

  • Diogo

For anyone with the “hmm something seems to have gone wrong” problem:
It happened with my iPad 2 Wi-Fi. I solved it by:
    1. Restauring to 5.1.1;
    2. Loading my iPad backup
    3. Running the jailbreak.
Took 2 minutes for it to complete, without erasing any settings. :)

  • frustrated_jb

i thought i was the only one having the “something gone wrong error” wasted 4 hours re jailbreaking my ipad 2. i think this is pod2g’s version of “apr1lrain” jailbreak! another EPIC FAIL for the chronic dev team!

  • klabelkholosh
