If you own a Apple TV 2G and recently updated it to iOS 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1), you will be happy to know that you can now jailbreak your device. Hackers over firecore updated their Seas0nPass tool to version 0.8.4 that allows you to jailbreak your AppleTV2 on iOS 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1) software. The nature of the method is ‘tethered’ which requires connecting Apple TV2 device to a computer every time your reboot your iOS device. However, a simple ‘tethered boot’ option has been made available with Seas0nPass.
In order to perform it, you’ll need the Seas0nPass 0.8.4, latest version of iTunes, Micro USB cable and a computer. Don’t worry, though–we’ll show you how to do it from scratch. Do not try the jailbreak method on the new 1080p Apple TV (Apple TV 3G). It only supports Apple TV2.
Steps to Use Seas0nPass to Jailbreak Apple TV 2G
Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (you can check for Software Update located in Apple menu).
Step 2: Download Seas0nPass 0.8.4 (or, refer to our download section) on your Mac OS X (10.6 or later). Unzip the ‘Seas0nPass.zip’ file and launch Seas0nPass. If prompted, enable UI scripting.

Step 3: Tap the ‘Create IPSW’ button in order to kick start the jailbreaking process.

Step 4: During the process, in the background, latest Apple TV2 software will be downloaded and file-system patches will be applied to create a pre-jailbroken custom IPSW.

Step 5: When prompted, connect your AppleTV to your Mac OS X via a micro-USB cable (leave power cable disconnected). Look for the light on the front of the AppleTV. When it begins to flash, point the remote at the AppleTV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seconds. If you have white (plastic) remote, it won’t work. Be sure you are pointing silver (aluminum) remote at the AppleTV.

Step 6: At this point, iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process. Wait until it’s all done with the restore process. iTunes will confirm you as soon as the restore process is completed.

Your Apple TV2 on iOS 5.0.1 (tethered) is jailbroken successfully. A red FC logo on the screen confirms that the ATV2 jailbreak was successful.

Tether boot your Apple TV2 Using Seas0nPass
Being a tethered Jailbreak you are required to boot your Apple TV2 using Seas0nPass whenever it loses power or you restart it. To tether boot your set-top box follow the instructions below.
Step 1: After restoring in iTunes, disconnect your Apple TV from the computer momentarily for the tethered boot process to work.
Step 2: Launch Seas0nPass and this time select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option, which is available on right side of the window.
Step 3: When prompted, connect your AppleTV device to your Mac using USB cable and wait for the rapid flashing light to appear. Connect the power source. Once both are connected hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds to put the device into DFU mode.

Step 4: Seas0nPass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable. When you receive the message – ‘Tethered boot complete! It is now safe to disconnect USB’, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable before the red light on the frontal of your AppleTV stops flashing.

Congratulations! You have successfully jailbroken your Apple TV 2G on iOS 5.0.1 using Seas0nPass 0.8.4 tool. Enjoy the many benefits of having a jailbroken Apple TV.
