iPhone Dev Team has finally taken the lid off downgrading iOS firmware for iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3. For jailbreak enthusiasts, the hacker camp has just released Redsn0w 0.9.11b1 for both windows and Mac OS X. This latest version of redsn0w packs necessary firmware patches which inject the required files into your device for making the downgrade process simple and straightforward.

Don’t worry, though-we’ll show you how to downgrade iOS 5.1 or 5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1 from scratch. Once you downgrade your device to 5.0.1, you can re-jailbreak your iPhone 4S/iPad using Greenpois0n Absinthe. If you have decided to follow the instructions for re- jailbreaking, use it carefully – you shouldn’t have a problem. Of course, before attempting any sort of jailbreak, make sure your iPhone 4S and iPad 2 data is backed up.

The steps works only if you have already saved your 5.0.1 SHSH blobs. If you haven’t, you are out of luck! Apple is not signing them anymore.

Important Points to Consider:

  1. You cannot downgrade without having SHSH blobs for your device at that lower firmware.
  2. The A5 downgrade method using redsn0w 0.9.11b1 updates your iOS device to the latest firmware before downgrading to the earlier one. During the process it updates your device to latest baseband. If you reply on unlocking your iPhone 4S, it is highly recommended, NOT to follow this firmware downgrade method. However, if you unlocked your iPhone via SAM method, baseband upgrade is not an issue.
  3. The method has not been tested. If redsn0w gets stuck at the “Waiting for device” stage for more than 30 seconds, you’ve hit a pesky GUI bug…that will be fixed in an upcoming version of Redsn0w

Downgrade Instructions

Step 1: Place your Saved 5.0.1 or 5.0 SHSH blobs on your desktop

Step 2: Run Redsn0w

Step 3: Click Extras

Step 4: Click Even more Button

Step 5: Click Restore Button

Step 6: Select the Saved SHSH blobs from your desktop to which you want to downgrade to. In this window you will find two other options – Local Restore and Remote Restore. Local blobs will use those SHSH blobs that are saved into your machine and Remote option will allow you to use SHSH blobs that are saved in Cydia. In order to enable Remote option, you have to connect your device in DFU mode.

Step 7: Redsn0w will stitch the SHSH blobs to the IPSW firmware file automatically will restore to it. Have patience, since it might take sometime for the process to finish.

The tutorial guide posted above comes handy in case you inadvertently updated your A5 device to iOS 5.1.1 or 5.1 and want to downgrade your iOS device from iOS 5.1.1/5.1 to iOS 5.0.1. After you have successfully downgraded, you can then jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using Absinthe.

In case you are facing any sort of issue, sound off in comments or on twitter.

Update #1: Many users complained that they were unable to restore iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) with redsnow. While trying to restore iPhone 4s (running iOS 5.0.1(9A406) ) with iOS5.0.1(9A406) – when firmware version iOS 5.0.1(9A406) is selected; the error appear – couldn’t restore “restoring for this IPSW isn’t currently available”. To fix, iPhone Dev Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.11b2 that conveniently downgrades your iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1 (9A406).

iPhone4S 5.0.1 “9A406″ was accidentally left out of the Keys.plist file…until the next redsn0w, see if you have 5.0.1 “9A405″ blobs

I used tinyumbrella to save shsh blob for my iPad 2. But when i click on restore button it errors out and says – To restore to firmware 5.0.1 on the ipad2, the IPSW for firmware 5.1.1 is also required. Please click ok and then locate that additional IPSW. Do I need to download the latest firmware(5.1.1) ? Can anyone help me @-@ !. ?

    • http://cydiablog.com/ Mike Webb

You need to download both the current IPSW (5.1.1) for your iPad 2 and the IPSW for the firmware you are restoring your device to. Once you have both IPSW’s downloaded to your desktop and have verified your hash files are complete, just follow the prompts. It simple and straightforward.

Is there anyone who can help me? I followed exactly the same instructions but it did not downgraded my firmware. When i navigate to Extras->Even More->Restore it says its not correct IPSW. in order to the earlier IPSW, you nedd to locate iOS 5.1.1 ipsw for your device. What should be done? help plz

tried 4 times but every time it failed. Having iPhone 4s “9A406″ 5.0.1…

    • http://cydiablog.com/ Mike Webb

Musclenerd issued an update – “We accidentally left out one of the two flavors (“9A406″) of 5.0.1 for iPhone4S. It’ll be in the next update, but in the meantime check if Cydia or TU saved your blobs for the other 5.0.1 for iPhone4S (“9A405”).”

iPhone4S 5.0.1 “9A406″ was accidentally left out of the Keys.plist file…until the next redsn0w, see if you have 5.0.1 “9A405″ blobs

Want to downgrade my iPhone 4S device from 5.1 to 5.0.1 (build 9A405). I tried with Mac and remote failed cannot find my SHSH blobs as its hidden on mac

      Hash files on Mac
•You must retrieve your saved hash file from your computer. TinyUmbrella hides the default folder in which the hash files are saved (/Users/your-user-name/.shsh)
oTo un-hide this enter the following into the Terminal app on Mac.
      •defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
oThe hold down the Option key and right click the Finder icon.
      oRe-launch the Finder.

oBrowse to /Users/your-user-name/.shsh and copy (not move) the “1033310xxxxxx-iphone3,1-5.0.1.shsh” file to desktop.
•Note: The file name will vary depending on iPhone model and ECID # but should end in -5.0.1.shsh.

oOnce you have the hash file copied to the desktop, re-hide the folders/files by entering the following into the Terminal app.
      •defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
oHold down the Option key and right click the Finder icon, re-launch the Finder

My iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 got stuck on the apple logo. If I restore to my custom firmware for 5.0.1 will it work since apple is not signing it anymore?

    • http://cydiablog.com/ Mike Webb

The method and tool used above is for A5 devices – iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3.
Any restore to older firmware requires the hash and APTicket files. If you have them for 5.0.1, use the older and stitch them to IPSW method

I have a factory unlocked iPhone 4S and I was able to downgrade from 5.1 to 5.0.1 using Remote Blobs with Redsn0w

    • Jay

How to get remote blobs? I have all new factory unlock iphone 4s with 5.1 pre-installed on it. So obviously I dont have SHSH blobs for 5.0.1. Can i still downgrade to 5.0.1 from 5.1? If yes, How?

  • iPhoneGuy

Tried to downgrade iPhone 4S but giving error. I am having all the .ipsw and SHSH blobs requird, but when it was “waiting for device” for 5.0.1 9A405 restore, it failed. Now when I use redsn0w again, it says cannot restore. Interestingly, if i try to restore my iPhone 4S using itunes, it says “the device isn’t eligible for the requested build”. Tried by un-checking “set cydia hosts on exit” in tiny umbrella. But error persists..

    • Kriple

same issue and restore failed on iPad 2

      • http://cydiablog.com/ Mike Webb

Need to know more information. Which version are you trying to restoring it to and how, also let us know what do you use. Windows OS or Mac OS X.

  • Black Sheep

Trying to downgrade my iPad 2 IPSW but itunes is not restoring my iPad 2,1! Throws itunes errors like 1600 and 1604. Tried fixing iTunes error with iReb utility as well. I actually used redsn0w jailbreak to stitch SHSH Blobs to 5.0.1 iOS on Windows. Am I doing something wrong?

    • http://cydiablog.com/ Mike Webb

Download both the IPSW (iOS 5.1.1) for your iPad 2 and the IPSW for the firmware you are restoring your device to (5.0.1). You must have the hashes for the firmware you are trying to restore to.

Go to Extras->Even More->Restore and follow the prompts

  • Sibanda

I tried downgrading on my iPhone 4S from 5.1 to 5.0.1 firmware. After finishing the Recovery my device stuck in recovery Mode and I cant get out of it. I tried using RecBoot but all in vain. Even tried switching to Pwned DFU Mode but it doesn’t help. I can repeat the recovery and it finished again but after it, the same Problem arises. Quick help is appreciated.
