iPhone Dev Team has finally taken the lid off downgrading iOS firmware for iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3. For jailbreak enthusiasts, the hacker camp has just released Redsn0w 0.9.11b1 for both windows and Mac OS X. This latest version of redsn0w packs necessary firmware patches which inject the required files into your device for making the downgrade process simple and straightforward.
Don’t worry, though-we’ll show you how to downgrade iOS 5.1 or 5.1.1 to iOS 5.0.1 from scratch. Once you downgrade your device to 5.0.1, you can re-jailbreak your iPhone 4S/iPad using Greenpois0n Absinthe. If you have decided to follow the instructions for re- jailbreaking, use it carefully – you shouldn’t have a problem. Of course, before attempting any sort of jailbreak, make sure your iPhone 4S and iPad 2 data is backed up.
The steps works only if you have already saved your 5.0.1 SHSH blobs. If you haven’t, you are out of luck! Apple is not signing them anymore.
Important Points to Consider:
- You cannot downgrade without having SHSH blobs for your device at that lower firmware.
- The A5 downgrade method using redsn0w 0.9.11b1 updates your iOS device to the latest firmware before downgrading to the earlier one. During the process it updates your device to latest baseband. If you reply on unlocking your iPhone 4S, it is highly recommended, NOT to follow this firmware downgrade method. However, if you unlocked your iPhone via SAM method, baseband upgrade is not an issue.
- The method has not been tested. If redsn0w gets stuck at the “Waiting for device” stage for more than 30 seconds, you’ve hit a pesky GUI bug…that will be fixed in an upcoming version of Redsn0w
Downgrade Instructions
Step 1: Place your Saved 5.0.1 or 5.0 SHSH blobs on your desktop
Step 2: Run Redsn0w

Step 3: Click Extras

Step 4: Click Even more Button

Step 5: Click Restore Button

Step 6: Select the Saved SHSH blobs from your desktop to which you want to downgrade to. In this window you will find two other options – Local Restore and Remote Restore. Local blobs will use those SHSH blobs that are saved into your machine and Remote option will allow you to use SHSH blobs that are saved in Cydia. In order to enable Remote option, you have to connect your device in DFU mode.
Step 7: Redsn0w will stitch the SHSH blobs to the IPSW firmware file automatically will restore to it. Have patience, since it might take sometime for the process to finish.
The tutorial guide posted above comes handy in case you inadvertently updated your A5 device to iOS 5.1.1 or 5.1 and want to downgrade your iOS device from iOS 5.1.1/5.1 to iOS 5.0.1. After you have successfully downgraded, you can then jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 using Absinthe.
In case you are facing any sort of issue, sound off in comments or on twitter.
Update #1: Many users complained that they were unable to restore iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) with redsnow. While trying to restore iPhone 4s (running iOS 5.0.1(9A406) ) with iOS5.0.1(9A406) – when firmware version iOS 5.0.1(9A406) is selected; the error appear – couldn’t restore “restoring for this IPSW isn’t currently available”. To fix, iPhone Dev Team has released Redsn0w 0.9.11b2 that conveniently downgrades your iPhone 4S to iOS 5.0.1 (9A406).
