iOS 5.1.1 download was made available recently. If you inadvertently upgraded your device to 5.1.1, you can apply the same iOS 5.1 tethered jailbreak (minus iPad 3/2 and iPhone 4S) by using the latest version of redsn0w. Since the jailbreak is tethered, you have to connect your iOS device to computer to reboot – every time your battery drains out or you accidentally power it off.

People looking to jailbreak their device on iOS 5.1.1 are advised to make back-ups of their data before jailbreaking using redsn0w and should keep it in mind that once it is jailbroken, its warranty becomes void. Don’t you worry! You always have an option to re-store the device back to stock firmware, which removes the traces of jailbreak.

Here’s the full guide on how to tether jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 using Redsn0w on Mac OS. Steps are exactly the same for windows users.

Supported Devices

The latest version of Redsn0w supports iPhone 3GS (Old Bootrom is untethered, new bootrom), iPhone 4 (GSM, CDMA), 1st-gen iPad, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G. It does not support Apple TV2, iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and The New iPad (iPad 3) right now. The reason the untether won’t work as-is on the iPad 2/3 or iPhone 4S is that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the A5/A5X based devices are not susceptible to the limera1n bootrom exploits.

Pre-requisites

Step 1: Download the latest version of Redsn0w and save onto your desktop. Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step 2: Run Redsn0w. Windows 7 users MUST run the redsn0w as an administrator mode. You can do this by right click the executable and select “Run as Administrator..” from the contextual menu.

Step 3: Now click the Jailbreak button

Step 4: Connect the iPod Touch or iPhone or iPad to Windows via USB cable. Make sure it’s OFF then click the Next button.

Step 5: You will be prompted to put the iPod Touch in DFU mode. Follow the on-screen instructions. To enter in DFU mode: Press the Home and Power together for exactly 10 seconds. Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 6: RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

Step 7: You will now have a new screen where you can select packages to install. Select Cydia and other options of your choice. Click Next to continue.

Step 8: Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will then start uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Once the ramdisk uploading process is completed, you will be notified as “done”. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

If you dare to take the plunge, share your success or failures with us in the comments.
