How to Unlock iPhone 4 BB 04.11.08 Using SAM – The Quick Guide

A Chinese hacker Loktar_Sun, who discovered vulnerability in ICCID was able to unlock iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S using SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module). The method posted by him successfully unlocks iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S on all basebands. Those who have been obsecrating for 04.11.08 iPhone 4 Unlock, this is certainly a welcome news.

Requirements:

  • Jailbroken iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, or iPhone 3GS that can be activated in iTunes (that is, not officially blacklisted) on iOS 5.0 and above.
  • The latest iTunes software installed on your computer with internet connected.
  • You must know the carrier that your iPhone is locked to.

The method to unlock iPhone is a bit cumbersome for rookies, but SAM (Subscriber Artificial Module) developer Sam Bingner has confirmed to release a SAM update that would make the process much simpler and easier to follow.

INSTRUCTIONS: SAM Unlock

Step 1: Install Sam Bingner’s SAM package from repo.bingner.com.

Step 2: Enter SAM by either going through the settings menu or find the SAMPrefs icon on your springboard. You will need to have the SIM card you intend to use in your iPhone.

Step 3: Navigate to utilities and select “De-Activate iPhone”, your ActivationState under “More Information” should now be “Unactivated”

Step 4: With SAM enabled, choose “By Country and Carrier” in “Method”; find your carrier, for some carriers operating more than one Carrier ID you may need to select “SIM ID”. Chose wisely and if you pick the incorrect the method will won’t work.

Step 5: Navigate to “More Information”, copy or write down the IMSI in “SAM Details”, then tap “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”.

Step 6: Navigate back to the main SAM screen and change your “Method” to manual. Paste or enter the IMSI string we saved in Step 5.

Step 7: Connect your iPhone to your computer and allow iTunes to activate it, double click “Phone Number” parameter at the main device screen and make sure that the ICCID matches that of your SIM card. If not you need to start over from Step 1.

Step 8: Unplug your iPhone and close the iTunes.

Step 9: Disable SAM.

Step 10: Connect your phone to iTunes again; you should get an error saying that your iPhone cannot be activated. This is normal. Just close iTunes and open it again.

Step 11: You should see signal bars in a short time, congratulations.

Step 12: Push notifications may stop working after this procedure but can be easily restored by “clear push” utility in SAM followed by connecting to iTunes.

    Hi Mike, looks like this method does not work any longer.
    Everything works fine until Step 10. I don’t get the error message, but only a message saying that my SIM card does not allow to activate my Iphone.
    Any advice about this?

    What if not jailbroken yet?
    Iclarified jailbreak guide says: These are instructions on how to perform an untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 using RedSn0w for Windows. This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock.  

    Does this matter?

    Well seems they closed the gap just tried another one and it gets to step 9 but upon doing step 10 the invalid SIM screen returns.

    Got a weird problem. At step 10, I don’t get the error message, the Iphone just connect to iTunes (just like in step 7…). Any 1 have the same issue?

      Just did one got the same error thing that the error did not show up but the phone after reboot was activated with just plugin in.

      Dude I just had your error what I did was reset all stockify then shut down iphone and back on, did the process again NOT WITH BUNDLE but COUNTRY CARRIER and the phone activated with no error so it activated at step 8 with signal and all. Tried calls and all and works perfect.

    Everything is perfect, the activation state says activated, the imei and the iccid numbers are a perfect match in itunes but no matter how long I wait, It still says No Service at the top left. Any ideas on how to solve this?

    It worked like a charm. had to struggle for a while though. So, this is a permanent solution, right? For e.g. no problems when the phone is restarted, or sim taken out and maybe when synched with iTunes. Probably my questions sound silly, but these are the concerns.

      Permanent as long as you use the same SIM card if you use a new SIM card have to do it all again.

    IT freaking worked finally but I couldn’t get it to work using country/carrier. I got tip below from biligu about vigin canada using bell mobility. Didn’t work with country/carrier and sim id selection so i tried bundle of bell/ca and selected the first sim ID and viola it worked. 

    The steps in the above article are to be followed as it is but bundle option is better. I was on 4.10bb and had been using gevey for last 2 years and lately even gevy stopped working. My GOD this is the best thing that has happened now i can sell it at much higher price than what others were offering of 40$.

      It only works for the SIM you used it is not a permanent unlock and most likely will be patched by apple save your ticket so you can still use your SIM, and remember if you insert another SIM you will have to do it all again and see if the vulnerability is still open.

    If iTunes says invalid SIM, you will need to manually select the appropriate carrier (Original seller of the iPhone) under one of the methods besides “Automatic” and click on a SIMID.

    MY WAY: Have your sim in!!!! and do not connect to PC OR MAC1, Install SAM, OPEN2, go Utilities -> DEACTIVATE3, go More Information -> Spoof real sim to sam->COPY IMSI for later use!-> back4, *IMPORTANT* go method select BY BUNDLE NAME-> back5, go bundle choice ATT_US (depends on your original carrier)-> back6, go sim id and just select one->back-> paste that imsi copied earlier on imsi(main pg)-> halfway doneCLOSE SAM7, connect PC or MAC open ITUNES then disconnect. :3 (if it say sim not supported :/// go back to step 3. if it display your iphone info, go on.)8, after disconnect, open SAM turn OFF ENABLED  (DISABLE :P )9, Connect again-> error-> click OK and close ITUNE -> REOPEN ITUNES(it may take a few tries)
    BY now your phone should start SEARCHING :D

    What i suggest is whoever is having success pls share you carrier and sim ID information. I would like to know if anyone from virgin canada has been able to unlock it.

      I suggest trying them it takes no more than 5 minutes to try all for a given carrier.

      Google is your friend Virgin Canada is an MVNO so thye piggy back on someone else network, namely Bell Mobility

    I unlocked my iphone by this method …. And then restored my iphone …. The unlock stayed …. So does this mean that the unlock will stay even after i update to 5.1 or for that matter any future firmware?

       Just dbl-click on your phone number in iTunes.. or it maybe showing N/A. It should then show the ICCID.

      You need to use the the information for the ORIGINAL company the phone is locked to, not the one you are using.

      Press restore to default or stockify then TURN OFF SAM and respring.
