Like the Mac version, Seas0nPass 0.8.3 for Windows is a helpful tool that allows you to jailbreak your AppleTV2 with the latest firmware iOS 5.0 (5.1), and easily go through the ‘tethered boot’ process. Check out our step-by-step instructions on how to jailbreak your Apple TV2 5.0 using Seas0nPass.
Jailbreaking, if you’re not familiar with the term, is the process of elevating privileges on your iOS device in order to gain access to system files and install third party applications that the device is by default set up to forbid.
For example, on jailbroken Apple TV, you can install 3rd party software like aTV Flash (black) – Plugins such as Media Player, Couch Surfer, nitoTV, Last.fm, Weather, RSS Feeds and Maintenance are already supported. But other popular plugs such as XBMC, Plex, Remote HD, Rowmote and Overflow will not work on jailbroken AppleTV 5.0 until the respective developers pushes out a necessary update.
- Latest version of iTunes.
- Latest version of Seas0nPass 0.8.3 for Windows (Refer to our download section).
- A micro USB cable.
- This jailbreak guide is intended for the Apple TV 2G. Using these jailbreaking instructions or method on another device will not work.
- Do not try the jailbreak method on the new 1080p Apple TV (Apple TV 3G).
Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (you can check for Software Update located in Apple menu).
Step 3: Tap the ‘Create IPSW’ button in order to kick start the jailbreaking process.
Step 4: During the process, in the background, latest AppleTV2 software will be downloaded and file-system patches will be applied to create a pre-jailbroken custom IPSW.
Step 5: When prompted, connect your AppleTV to your Windows PC via a micro-USB cable (leave power cable disconnected). Look for the light on the front of the AppleTV. When it begins to flash, point the remote at the AppleTV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seconds. If you have white (plastic) remote, it won’t work. Be sure you are pointing silver (aluminum) remote at the AppleTV
Step 6: At this point, iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process. Wait until it’s all done with the restore process. iTunes will confirm you as soon as the restore process is completed.
Your Apple TV 2 on iOS 5.1 (tethered) is jailbroken successfully. Look out for a temporary red FC logo on the screen to confirm that the jailbreak was successful.
Using Seas0nPass for a ‘tethered boot’
Being a tethered Jailbreak you are required to boot your Apple TV2 using Seas0nPass whenever it loses power or you restart it. To boot tether Apple TV 2G follow the instructions below.
Step 1: After restoring in iTunes, disconnect your Apple TV from the computer momentarily for the tethered boot process to work.
Step 2: Launch Seas0nPass and this time select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option, which is available on right side of the window.
Step 3: When prompted, connect your AppleTV device to your Mac using USB cable and wait for the rapid flashing light to appear. Connect the power source. Once both are connected hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds to put the device into DFU mode.
Step 4: Seas0nPass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable. When you receive the message – ‘Tethered boot complete! It is now safe to disconnect USB’, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable before the red light on the frontal of your AppleTV stops flashing.
Congratulations! You have successfully jailbroken your Apple TV 2G running iOS 5.0 (5.1) using Seas0nPass 0.8.3 on Windows.
